Fort Vredeburg is a restored 18th-century Dutch colonial fortress situated at the intersection of Malioboro and the Kraton axis. Now a museum of the Indonesian independence struggle, it features dioramas and exhibits chronicling resistance from colonial oppression through the revolutionary period.
Originally a wooden stockade built in 1760, the fortress was reconstructed in stone by the Dutch in 1787 to monitor the Sultan and his court. It played a role during the Japanese occupation and the Indonesian revolution. After independence it fell into disrepair before being restored and opened as a museum in 1992.
