The Merapi Lava Tour is an off-road jeep adventure through the destruction zone left by Mount Merapi's catastrophic 2010 eruption. Open-top 4x4 vehicles navigate through hardened lava fields, devastated villages, and ash-covered landscapes on the volcano's flanks.

History

Mount Merapi's devastating 2010 eruption was its largest in over a century, generating pyroclastic flows that travelled 15 km and killed 353 people. Among the victims was Mbah Maridjan, the volcano's spiritual gatekeeper who refused to evacuate. The jeep tour routes were established by local communities to generate income from tourism while sharing the story of the disaster.

Visitor Tips

• Early morning: Tours starting at 06:00 offer the best chance of clear views of the summit.
• Dust protection: Bring a scarf or bandana — the volcanic ash can be thick on the trails.
• Duration: 2.5–3 hours for the full tour.
