The Kraton of Yogyakarta is the official seat of the reigning Sultan and the cultural heart of the city. Founded in 1755 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I, this walled palace complex blends Javanese cosmology with European colonial architectural influences and remains a functioning royal court.
The Kraton was established in 1755 following the Treaty of Giyanti, which divided the Mataram Sultanate. Its layout follows Javanese cosmological principles, aligned on an imaginary axis connecting Mount Merapi to the south coast and the Queen of the Southern Sea. Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, the current ruler, also serves as the elected governor of the Yogyakarta Special Region.
