History
Founded as the capital of the Islamic Mataram Sultanate by Panembahan Senopati in 1582, Kotagede remained the political center until the court moved to Pleret in 1613. The 2006 earthquake damaged many heritage buildings, prompting ongoing restoration efforts by local communities and international organizations.
