Kalibiru is a community-managed eco-park in the Menoreh Hills west of Yogyakarta, perched above the emerald waters of Sermo Reservoir. The pine-covered hilltop features a series of treetop photo platforms offering sweeping panoramic views of the reservoir, surrounding hills, and on clear days, the distant coastline.
The pine forests at Kalibiru were planted in the 1960s as a government reforestation project. In 2008, the local community — seeking an alternative to illegal logging — began developing the forest as a nature tourism destination. The photo platforms were added around 2014 and quickly made the site one of Yogyakarta's most popular day-trip destinations.
