Overview
Goa Jomblang is a vertical cave in the Gunung Kidul karst landscape, famous for the spectacular 'heavenly light' — a beam of sunlight that penetrates through the sinkhole into the underground cavern around midday, illuminating the ancient forest floor below.
Highlights
- Heavenly light beam: Between 10:00 and 12:00, a shaft of sunlight creates an ethereal spotlight in the cavern — a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity.
- Rappelling descent: Visitors are lowered 60 metres on ropes into the sinkhole, making the entrance itself an adventure.
- Underground forest: The cave floor supports a unique ecosystem of ferns, mosses, and ancient trees.
History
Goa Jomblang is a collapsed doline (sinkhole) formed by the gradual dissolution of the Gunung Kidul limestone plateau. The cave system connects to Goa Grubug, a horizontal cave where the light beam occurs. It was opened to tourists around 2010 and quickly became one of Yogyakarta's most sought-after experiences.
