Overview
Imogiri is the sacred hilltop burial complex of the Mataram Sultanate and its successor kingdoms of Yogyakarta and Surakarta. Visitors must climb a steep staircase of 345 steps and don traditional Javanese court dress before entering the hallowed cemetery grounds.
Highlights
- Court dress requirement: Visitors are lent full Javanese court attire (jarik and blangkon) before entering — a unique and immersive cultural experience.
- Royal tombs: The tombs of sultans and queens from the 17th century onward, tended by palace retainers.
- Hilltop setting: The staircase ascent rewards with panoramic views over the surrounding countryside.
History
Imogiri was established in 1645 by Sultan Agung, the powerful ruler of the Mataram Sultanate. After the Mataram kingdom split in 1755, both the Yogyakarta and Surakarta royal families continued to bury their deceased sultans here, making it a shared sacred site. It remains under the joint care of both courts.
