Merdeka Square is a 1-km² public square surrounding the National Monument, making it one of the largest city squares in the world. The park features fountains, monuments, and expansive lawns.
Known as "Koningsplein" during the Dutch colonial era, the square was the centre of Batavia's European district. It was renamed Merdeka (Freedom) Square after independence in 1945.
