The Shenzhen Museum is the city's principal history and archaeology museum, housed in the Civic Centre complex in Futian. Its permanent exhibitions trace the region's history from Neolithic coastal settlements through the Opium Wars to Shenzhen's explosive modern growth.
The museum was originally established in 1981, just one year after Shenzhen was designated a Special Economic Zone. It moved to its current purpose-built facility in the Civic Centre in 2008. The museum serves as both a cultural institution and a record of one of the most rapid urbanisation processes in human history.
