Nantou Ancient Town

Overview

Nantou Ancient Town is a 1,700-year-old walled settlement in Nanshan District that has been revitalised into one of Shenzhen's most compelling cultural destinations. The historic town core, with its narrow lanes and Qing-dynasty buildings, now houses galleries, design studios, bookshops, and artisanal cafés.

History

Nantou served as the administrative seat of Bao'an County from the Jin dynasty (331 AD), making it by far the oldest settlement in modern Shenzhen. The town declined after Shenzhen's centre shifted eastward, and it became a dense urban village. In 2017, it was selected as the main venue for the Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism/Architecture, sparking a careful revitalisation that preserved its historic fabric while introducing contemporary cultural uses.
