Overview
M50, officially named 50 Moganshan Road, is Shanghai's foremost contemporary art district. Set inside former cotton mills and textile factories along Suzhou Creek, it houses more than 130 studios, galleries, and creative businesses.
Highlights
- ShanghART Gallery: One of China's first contemporary art galleries, representing leading Chinese artists.
- Island6 Arts Center: An interactive media-art lab blending technology and visual art.
- Industrial Charm: Exposed brick, rusted machinery, and loading docks lend an authentic post-industrial atmosphere.
History
The site began its artistic transformation in 2000 when painter Xue Song rented a disused warehouse. Word spread through the art community, and by 2005 M50 had become Shanghai's answer to Beijing's 798 Art District.
