Taipa Village

Overview

Taipa Village is a charming pedestrian quarter on Macau's Taipa island, where narrow lanes wind past pastel-coloured Portuguese colonial buildings, traditional Chinese shophouses, and scores of bakeries, noodle shops, and souvenir stores. It offers an authentic contrast to the glitz of the nearby Cotai Strip.

History

Before Macau's reclamation boom, Taipa was a separate island with a village economy based on firecracker manufacturing and fishing. The Portuguese-era buildings date mostly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The area underwent careful revitalisation in the 2000s, attracting cafés and boutiques while preserving its low-rise character.
