St. Lawrence's Church (Igreja de São Lourenço) is one of Macau's three oldest parish churches, set in a quiet residential neighbourhood south of Senado Square. Its elegant neoclassical design and walled garden courtyard make it one of the most atmospheric churches in the Historic Centre.
Originally built in the 1560s by Portuguese Jesuits, the church was reconstructed in stone in 1618 and took its present neoclassical form after an 1846 rebuild. Local fishermen's wives would pray here for the safe return of their husbands, earning it the Cantonese name "Wind-Calming Hall."
