Kun Iam Temple is one of Macau's largest and most important Buddhist temples, dedicated to the Goddess of Mercy (Kun Iam/Guanyin). Its terraced gardens and richly ornamented halls have served as an active place of worship for over seven centuries.
The temple dates to at least the 13th century, with the present structures largely rebuilt in the 17th century. Its historical significance extends beyond religion — U.S. envoy Caleb Cushing signed the Treaty of Wanghia here in 1844, the first treaty between China and the United States.
