Coloane Village is Macau's most tranquil neighbourhood — a former pirate-fighting fishing settlement at the southern tip of the territory, with narrow lanes, pastel-painted houses, and the Chapel of St. Francis Xavier. It feels a world away from the casinos.
Coloane was once notorious for piracy; the last major pirate battle occurred in 1910. A monument in the village square commemorates the Portuguese victory. The village remained agricultural and largely undeveloped through the 20th century, preserving its rural character even as Cotai grew next door.
