Overview
The Lingkor is the outer pilgrimage circuit that encircles the entire old city of Lhasa, including the Potala Palace and the Jokhang Temple. Walking the Lingkor at dawn alongside devoted Tibetan pilgrims is one of the most profound cultural experiences available in the city.
Highlights
- Dawn Pilgrimage: Devout Tibetans walk the circuit before sunrise, spinning hand-held prayer wheels and murmuring mantras — joining them is deeply moving.
- Full City Circuit: The approximately 8 km route passes through diverse neighborhoods, from the base of the Potala to the old quarter.
- Prayer Wheels & Mani Stones: The route is lined with large prayer-wheel stations and carved mani stones.
History
The Lingkor has been an active pilgrimage route for centuries, predating the modern city that has grown up around it. While urbanization has altered parts of the route, the devotion of the walkers remains unchanged.
