Overview
The Leshan Giant Buddha is a 71-meter-tall stone statue of Maitreya carved into a cliff face where three rivers converge. It is the largest stone Buddha in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
Highlights
- The Statue: At 71 meters tall with 7-meter-long ears and 5.5-meter-wide feet, the sheer scale is awe-inspiring.
- Nine Turns Stairway: A narrow staircase carved into the cliff beside the Buddha, offering close-up views.
- River Boat View: A panoramic perspective of the full Buddha from a boat on the Min River.
History
Construction began in 713 AD under the monk Haitong, who hoped the Buddha would calm the turbulent river waters. It took 90 years to complete, finishing in 803 AD. An ingenious hidden drainage system protects the statue from erosion.
