Overview
Shichahai is a scenic lakeside district northwest of the Forbidden City, encompassing three connected lakes — Qianhai, Houhai, and Xihai — fringed by weeping willows, historic hutongs, and a vibrant strip of bars and restaurants.
Highlights
- Houhai Lake: The liveliest of the three lakes, ringed by bars and restaurants with lakeside terraces, especially atmospheric after dark.
- Hutong Architecture: Some of Beijing's best-preserved traditional courtyard houses (siheyuan) line the narrow lanes around the lakes.
- Winter Skating: The frozen lakes become natural ice rinks from December to February, where locals skate, sled, and play ice hockey.
History
The lakes were part of the Grand Canal terminus during the Yuan dynasty and became a fashionable residential area for Qing-era nobles. Prince Gong's Mansion and the Soong Ching-ling Residence both sit in this district.
Visitor Tips
- Sunset Walk: The western shore of Houhai at sunset offers magical light and reflections on the water.
- Rickshaw Tours: Pedicab tours through the surrounding hutongs depart from the north shore of Houhai.
- Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
