Overview
The National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA), nicknamed 'The Egg,' is a titanium-and-glass dome designed by French architect Paul Andreu, rising dramatically from an artificial lake just west of Tiananmen Square.
Highlights
- Architecture: The ellipsoidal dome, 212 meters long and 46 meters high, appears to float on water and is accessed via an underwater tunnel.
- Three Halls: Houses an opera house (2,416 seats), a concert hall (2,017 seats), and a theatre (1,040 seats) under one shell.
- Daytime Tours: Non-performance visitors can tour the stunning interiors, including the olive-wood-paneled concert hall.
History
Completed in 2007 after a controversial design competition, it cost 2.7 billion yuan. Its modern form deliberately contrasts with the ancient structures surrounding Tiananmen, sparking fierce architectural debate.
Visitor Tips
- Evening Performance: Attending a concert or opera is the best way to experience the building — tickets are surprisingly affordable.
- Day Pass: A daytime visit ticket (30 CNY) gives access to the interiors and art exhibitions.
- Duration: 1–1.5 hours.
