Overview
Capital Museum is a modern, architecturally striking museum dedicated to the history and culture of Beijing specifically. Its curated exhibitions offer a more focused and accessible alternative to the vast National Museum.
Highlights
- Old Beijing Folk Customs: A detailed recreation of traditional Beijing streetscapes, shops, and domestic life from the Qing dynasty.
- Buddhist Statuary: An exceptional gallery of Buddhist sculptures spanning 1,500 years, beautifully lit in a dramatic darkened hall.
- Porcelain Gallery: Fine ceramics from Beijing's own kilns and from the imperial collections.
History
Opened in 2005 in a striking contemporary building designed by French architect Jean-Marie Duthilleul. It replaced the original Capital Museum that had been housed in the Confucius Temple since 1981.
