Overview
The Bell Tower stands 47 meters tall just 100 meters north of the Drum Tower, forming the northern terminus of Beijing's historic central axis. Built entirely of brick and stone, it is one of the sturdiest ancient structures in the city.
Highlights
- Bronze Bell: The 63-ton bell inside is one of the largest and oldest in China, its deep resonance once audible across 20 kilometers.
- Stone Construction: Unlike most Chinese towers which use timber, the Bell Tower is built entirely of brick and stone after its wooden predecessor was destroyed by fire.
- Rooftop Views: The top offers excellent views south toward the Drum Tower and the hutong rooftops of old Beijing.
History
The original wooden Bell Tower was built in 1272 under Kublai Khan. After two fires destroyed wooden versions, Emperor Yongle rebuilt it in fire-resistant brick and stone in 1420. The bell rang daily until 1924.
