Overview
The Kangaroo Point Cliffs are a dramatic 20-metre basalt cliff face on the southern bank of the Brisbane River, directly opposite the CBD. A riverside boardwalk, climbing walls, and grassy parklands make it a popular sunset and recreation spot.
Highlights
- Rock climbing and abseiling: The cliffs offer public rock-climbing routes managed by Riverlife Adventure Centre.
- Sunset views: Some of the best unobstructed views of the Brisbane CBD skyline at golden hour.
- Cliff boardwalk: A paved riverside path running the length of the cliffs, ideal for walking or jogging.
History
The cliffs are the remnants of a volcanic basalt flow from around 228 million years ago. They were quarried extensively in the 19th century for building stone — much of colonial Brisbane was built from this rock. The park was formally established in the 1990s.
Visitor Tips
- Tip 1: Bring a picnic blanket and arrive 30 minutes before sunset for the best cliff-top experience.
- Tip 2: Abseiling sessions can be booked on the spot at the Riverlife Centre at the base of the cliffs.
- Duration: 30 minutes–1 hour.
