Bunk'Art 1

Overview

Bunk'Art 1 is a massive 3,000-square-metre Cold War nuclear bunker built into the side of Mount Dajt, converted into a striking history museum and contemporary art space. Constructed in secret for dictator Enver Hoxha and the political elite, it now tells the story of Albania's militarised isolation.

Highlights

• 106 Rooms: An underground labyrinth of decontamination chambers, war rooms, and dormitories spread over five floors.
• Hoxha's Private Apartment: A recreated suite with its original 1970s furnishings, telephone switchboard, and escape tunnel.
• Art Installations: Contemporary Albanian artists have created immersive works inside the bunker's claustrophobic corridors.

History

Built between 1972 and 1978, the bunker was designed to shelter 300 members of the political and military elite during a nuclear attack. It remained classified until after the fall of communism and was opened to the public as a museum in 2014.

Visitor Tips

• Wear warm clothing — the bunker stays around 16°C year-round.
• Allow extra time to reach it — it's on the outskirts of the city near the Dajti cable car station.
• Duration: 1.5–2 hours.
