Positano is the Amalfi Coast's most iconic village, its pastel-coloured houses stacked down a steep cliff to a crescent of dark-sand beach. Made famous by John Steinbeck's 1953 essay in Harper's Bazaar.
A modest fishing settlement until the mid-20th century, Positano exploded in popularity after Steinbeck's article and the arrival of artists and jet-setters in the 1960s.
