The Shandon Quarter is a historic hillside neighbourhood north of the River Lee, centred around the iconic Shandon Bells tower. Its stepped streets, brightly painted houses, and craft workshops give it a bohemian, village-within-a-city feel.
Shandon was the trading heart of Cork's butter industry in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Butter Exchange complex — the largest butter market in the world — drove the neighbourhood's growth. After the trade declined, the area fell quiet but has been revitalised as a cultural quarter.
