Majorna is a former shipyard workers' district on the south bank of the Göta älv with a strong community identity. It is prouder and grittier than Haga or Linnéstaden — a genuine neighbourhood of local bakeries, craft beer bars, and independent shops where everyday Gothenburg life unfolds.
Majorna grew up around the 19th-century shipyards and docks that once dominated Gothenburg's waterfront. As the shipbuilding industry declined in the 1970s, the neighbourhood went through a period of disinvestment before being rediscovered by artists, students, and young families attracted by affordable rents and strong community bonds.
