Skadarlija is Belgrade's bohemian quarter — a 400-metre cobblestone street lined with traditional Serbian restaurants (kafane), antique shops, and street musicians. Often compared to Montmartre in Paris, it has been the gathering place of Serbian writers, poets, and artists since the 1830s.
Skadarlija's bohemian identity took shape in the 1830s when it became home to actors from the nearby National Theatre. By the early 20th century, the street was synonymous with literary salons and late-night gatherings. It was formally declared a cultural monument in 1966.
