Overview
The Fløibanen funicular whisks passengers from the city centre to the summit of Mt. Fløyen (320 m) in just six minutes. It is Bergen's most popular single attraction, used by more than 1.5 million passengers a year — tourists and commuting locals alike.
Highlights
- Panoramic ride: Large windows give unobstructed views as the carriage climbs steeply above the rooftops.
- Summit platform: An expansive viewing terrace at the top with 360° views over the city, harbour, and surrounding mountains.
- Network of trails: From the top, well-marked paths lead through forest to lakes, a playground, and a troll forest sculpture garden.
History
The funicular opened on 15 January 1918, initially with wooden carriages. It was modernised in 2002 with new Swiss-built carriages carrying up to 100 passengers each. A second major refurbishment took place in 2021.
