La Vucciria is Palermo's most legendary market district, immortalised in Renato Guttuso's famous 1974 painting. While the daytime food market has shrunk, the area transforms at night into an open-air aperitivo scene with cheap drinks and live music.
The name comes from the French boucherie — butchery. Once Palermo's central food market, its commercial decline in the late 20th century gave way to a bohemian nightlife revival in the 2000s.
