Via XX Settembre is Genoa's main commercial artery, a grand arcaded boulevard running from Piazza De Ferrari to Piazza della Vittoria. Its elegant 19th-century architecture, covered walkways, and department stores make it the city's principal shopping and promenading street.
The street was cut through the old city fabric in the late 19th century as part of Genoa's modernisation programme. Named after the date of Italy's liberation of Rome (20 September 1870), it was designed as a grand Haussmann-style boulevard with uniform facades.
