The Terme Achilliane are ancient Roman baths located directly beneath Piazza del Duomo, accessible through a staircase in the cathedral square. The vaulted underground chambers, partly flooded by the Amenano River, create an atmospheric subterranean experience.
Dating from the 4th or 5th century AD, the baths were likely part of a larger thermal complex serving the Roman forum area above. After the fall of Rome, they were forgotten and gradually filled with sediment and groundwater. Excavations in the 19th century revealed the complex, and modern drainage keeps them partially accessible.
