The Naval Maritime Museum of Oia occupies a restored 19th-century captain's mansion and documents Santorini's surprisingly rich seafaring history. Through ship models, navigation instruments, historical photographs, and maritime documents, it tells the story of a small volcanic island that once fielded one of the largest merchant fleets in the Greek islands.
Opened in 1956, the museum was established to preserve the island's maritime heritage as the traditional shipping industry declined. Oia's merchant fleet numbered over 180 ships at its peak in the mid-19th century, trading across the Mediterranean and Black Sea. The devastating 1956 earthquake destroyed most of the village's grand captain's houses and effectively ended its maritime era.
