Emporio is a medieval fortified village in southern Santorini, centered around a remarkably well-preserved goulas (tower fortress) with a maze-like layout designed to confuse pirate invaders. It is one of the five kastelia (castle villages) of Santorini and offers an authentic glimpse into the island's defensive medieval architecture.
Emporio was one of five fortified settlements (kastelia) built on Santorini during the Venetian and Ottoman periods to protect residents from pirate raids. The goulas at its center dates to the 15th century and served as the last refuge during attacks. The village was the most populated settlement on the island until the 19th century and still retains much of its medieval character.
