Monolithos Castle is a ruined 15th-century Knights' fortress perched atop a sheer 236-metre rocky pinnacle on the southwest coast of Rhodes. Only the outer walls and a small chapel remain, but the views are among the most dramatic on the island.
Built in 1476 by Grand Master d'Aubusson as one of a chain of defensive castles along the coast, Monolithos was considered impregnable. It protected the southwestern coast from Ottoman raids. The fortress was abandoned after the Ottoman conquest in 1522.
