Overview
The iconic row of whitewashed windmills perched on the low hill above Little Venice is Mykonos's defining silhouette. Built by the Venetians in the 16th century, they once ground grain shipped from across the Cyclades.
Highlights
- Kato Mili Row: Five windmills standing in a photogenic line, visible from the harbour and from cruise ships approaching the island.
- Sunset Backdrop: The windmills frame spectacular sunset views over Little Venice and the Aegean.
- Boni Windmill: One windmill (the Boni) has been restored as a small museum with its original mechanisms.
History
Mykonos once had over 30 windmills. The island's position on a major Aegean shipping route made it a natural grain-processing hub. The Kato Mili (Lower Mills) cluster dates to the 16th century and operated until the early 20th century when mechanised mills replaced them.
