Overview
Panagia Paraportiani is a stunning whitewashed church complex on the edge of Kastro in Mykonos Town — one of the most photographed churches in the world. Its flowing, asymmetric form resembles a sculpted snowdrift.
Highlights
- Five-in-One Architecture: The structure is actually five separate chapels fused together over four centuries, creating an organic sculptural form.
- Whitewashed Perfection: Annually re-whitewashed, the building's smooth curves and arches create dramatic light-and-shadow compositions.
- Kastro Location: Sits at the entrance to the medieval Kastro (castle) district of Chora.
History
The lowest four chapels date to the 14th–15th centuries; the fifth chapel on top was added in the 17th century. The name "Paraportiani" means "Our Lady of the Side Gate," referring to its position beside the entrance to the medieval castle. The church is classified as a listed monument.
Visitor Tips
- Exterior Only: The interior is rarely open to visitors — the attraction is the extraordinary exterior form.
- Best Light: Morning light from the east illuminates the whitewashed walls most dramatically.
- Duration: 15–20 minutes.
