The Monastery of Paleokastro (Our Lady of the Old Castle) sits on a hilltop east of Ano Mera, offering sweeping views over the island's interior and the eastern Aegean. The small 18th-century complex houses a revered icon of the Virgin Mary.
The site of Paleokastro ("Old Castle") was originally a medieval fortification used as a refuge during pirate raids. The monastery was built on the castle ruins in the 18th century. The annual feast day on September 8th draws islanders for a traditional panigiri (celebration).
