The Natural History Museum of Crete, run by the University of Crete, explores the geological and ecological history of the eastern Mediterranean through interactive exhibits, dioramas, and a large earthquake simulator. It is the largest natural history museum in the eastern Mediterranean region.
The museum was founded in 1980 as part of the University of Crete's biology department. It moved to its current location — a repurposed power plant on the waterfront — in 2006. Its research programs focus on Mediterranean biodiversity, paleontology, and geology.
