Mount Giouchtas (811 m) rises south of Heraklion, its profile famously said to resemble the face of Zeus. The summit viewpoint offers sweeping 360-degree panoramas of the city, the Cretan Sea, and the island's interior mountains. An ancient Minoan peak sanctuary once stood at the top.
Mount Giouchtas was sacred to the Minoans, who built a peak sanctuary here for ritual offerings, as evidenced by bronze figurines and stone altars found during excavations. The mythological tradition holds that the mountain is the grave of Zeus. The summit chapel dates to the 14th century.
