Archanes is a beautifully restored wine-producing village located 14 km south of Heraklion, at the foot of Mount Giouchtas. Known for its Minoan archaeological sites, neoclassical houses, and thriving local food scene, it won a European prize for heritage restoration and offers a glimpse of authentic inland Cretan life.
Archanes has been continuously inhabited since the Minoan period (circa 2000 BCE). The Anemospilia temple, excavated in 1979, yielded sensational evidence suggesting a ritual sacrifice interrupted by an earthquake. In the modern era, the village declined until a major EU-funded restoration in the 1990s turned it into a model heritage village.
