Agia Pelagia is a scenic sheltered bay 20 km northwest of Heraklion, tucked between rocky headlands and offering remarkably calm, turquoise waters. The crescent-shaped beach is lined with tavernas and small hotels, giving it the feel of a Mediterranean fishing village rather than a resort strip.
Agia Pelagia was a sleepy fishing hamlet until the 1970s, when tourism development began along the bay. Despite growth, it has retained a village scale and character. The surrounding area contains Minoan-era remains, and the bay was likely used as a natural harbor in antiquity.
