25th of August Street (Leoforos 25is Avgoustou) is Heraklion's grand pedestrian avenue, stretching from the Venetian Harbor south to Lion Square. Lined with neoclassical buildings, Venetian-era landmarks, and pavement cafés, it is the city's ceremonial spine and the primary route for an architectural walking tour.
The street is named in commemoration of the 25th of August 1898, when Cretan rebels and British soldiers were killed by an Ottoman mob in what became known as the "Massacre of Heraklion." This event accelerated international pressure that led to Crete's autonomy and eventual union with Greece. The street follows the original Venetian thoroughfare from the port to the city center.
