Sofia's free public mineral water fountains are a unique feature of the city, drawing from the natural hot springs that have attracted settlers since antiquity. The most popular fountain is located in front of the Central Mineral Baths, where locals queue with bottles to fill with warm, mineral-rich water.
Sofia's mineral springs are the reason the city was founded—the Thracian Serdi tribe, then the Romans, settled here because of the warm springs. There are over 40 mineral springs within the city limits, several of which have been channeled into public fountains.
