Franziskanerkirche

Overview

The Franziskanerkirche (Franciscan Church) is one of the oldest churches in Salzburg, remarkable for the dramatic contrast between its dark, heavy Romanesque nave (13th century) and the soaring, light-filled late-Gothic choir (1408–50) by Hans von Burghausen.

History

The nave dates to the 12th–13th century; the Gothic choir was added by architect Hans von Burghausen in 1408–50. Fischer von Erlach designed a Baroque high altar in 1709, which was later replaced. The church has been in Franciscan hands since 1583.
