The Ponts Couverts are three medieval bridges spanning four channels of the River Ill at the entrance to Petite France. Defended by four massive stone towers that once anchored the city's western fortifications, they offer one of Strasbourg's most iconic panoramas.
Built in the 13th century as part of the city's defensive fortifications, the bridges were originally covered with wooden roofs (hence the name), which were removed in 1784. The four towers served as watchtowers and prisons. They are classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
