Overview
The Cathédrale Platform is the public viewing terrace at 66 meters atop the north tower of Strasbourg Cathedral, reached via a dramatic 332-step spiral staircase. It offers the finest aerial panorama of the city, the Rhine Valley, and on clear days, the Black Forest and Vosges mountains.
Highlights
- 360° Views: The platform offers unobstructed views in every direction — the Grande Île rooftops, the Rhine Plain, and distant mountain ranges.
- Black Forest: On clear days, the ridgeline of the Schwarzwald is clearly visible across the Rhine.
- North Spire: Look up at the unfinished north spire — the intended south spire was never built.
History
The platform was created when the north spire was completed in 1439, making the cathedral the world's tallest building. The intended matching south spire was never started due to cost. The platform has been open to visitors since the 19th century.
Visitor Tips
- 332 Steps: The climb is physically demanding with a narrow spiral staircase — not for those with vertigo.
- Clear Days: Check visibility before climbing — the Black Forest and Vosges views are only visible on clear days.
- Duration: 20–30 minutes.
