Overview
The Villa Méditerranée is a strikingly cantilevered contemporary building by Stefano Boeri, hovering dramatically over a water basin next to the MuCEM. Designed as a center for Mediterranean dialogue and cultural exchange, its architecture is as compelling as any exhibition inside.
Highlights
- The Cantilever: The building's most dramatic feature is a 40-meter concrete overhang projecting out over the water — seemingly defying gravity.
- Underwater Gallery: A submerged exhibition space with windows looking into the basin of water underneath the cantilever.
- Cultural Events: Regular conferences, exhibitions, and cultural events focused on Mediterranean societies.
History
Designed by Italian architect Stefano Boeri and opened in 2013 alongside the MuCEM for the European Capital of Culture year. The €70 million project was commissioned by the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region as a platform for intercultural dialogue across the Mediterranean.
