La Croix-Rousse is Lyon's bohemian hilltop neighborhood, historically the center of the city's silk-weaving industry and today a vibrant mix of artists' studios, independent boutiques, organic food shops, and street art. Its steep slopes and hidden traboules give it a village-within-a-city atmosphere.
La Croix-Rousse earned the nickname 'the hill that works' (la colline qui travaille) — in contrast to Fourvière, 'the hill that prays.' By the early 19th century, over 30,000 canuts (silk workers) operated Jacquard looms in the tall-ceilinged apartments built specially to accommodate the massive machines. The canuts' revolts of 1831 and 1834 were among the first major workers' uprisings in industrial history.
