The Bahnhofsviertel (Railway Station Quarter) is Frankfurt's most complex and contradictory neighborhood — a gritty, rapidly evolving district around the Hauptbahnhof that has become one of Germany's most exciting dining and nightlife destinations, coexisting with its older identity as a red-light district.
Built in the late 19th century around the monumental Hauptbahnhof, the Bahnhofsviertel was Frankfurt's entertainment district from the start. In the post-war decades it declined into a red-light and drug-dealing zone. Since the 2010s, creative entrepreneurs have transformed parts of the quarter into one of Germany's trendiest food and drink destinations.
