Overview
Greenmarket Square is a historic cobblestoned plaza in the heart of Cape Town's old city. By day, it transforms into a vibrant open-air market selling African crafts, jewellery, textiles, and curios from across the continent.
Highlights
- African Crafts: Beaded jewellery, wood carvings, wire art, and textiles from multiple African countries.
- Architecture: The square is surrounded by Art Deco and Cape Dutch buildings, including the Old Town House (1755).
- Atmosphere: Drumming, trading, and animated haggling create a genuinely African market atmosphere.
History
Established as a market in 1696, Greenmarket Square was originally a slave market and trading post. The Old Town House on the square served as the original City Hall and now houses the Michaelis Collection of Dutch and Flemish art.
